Safety Smart ® Science Fire Recommended for grades 4,5,6,7,8

Bill Nye the Science Guy ignites learning as he shows students how to be Safety Smart around fire. By explaining the science of fire, including the roles heat, fuel and oxygen play, Bill demonstrates how knowledge and awareness provide the opportunities to learn and practice safe behaviors.

OBJECTIVES

  • Students will be able to understand that fire needs fuel, heat, and oxygen to keep it burning; remove any one of these, and the fire goes out.
  • Students will be able to understand that fire is a chemical reaction.
  • Students will be able to understand that heat is transferred by conduction, convection, and radiation.
  • Students will be able to recall the definition of a flashover.
  • Students will be able to name ways to increase chances of surviving a fire.
